 Kinds of Informative Speaking. We spend most of our lives speaking to each other. It is our natural mode of communication. Effective speaking is an important tool of communication. Speaking means making a speech to a group of people for the purpose of informing any idea or persuading them to accept our proposal or suggestion etc.

Audience Analysis:

Audience analysis is the process of examining information about your listeners. That analysis helps you to adapt your message so that your listeners will respond as you wish.

The more you know and understand the background of your audience and their needs, the better you can prepare your speech.

When we analyze our audience, there are three ways to do this; demographic analysis, attitudinal analysis, and environmental analysis.

Demographic Analysis:

Demographic analysis involves age, gender, culture, ethnicity, race, religion, and educational level.

Attitudinal Analysis:

Attitudinal analysis addresses the audience’s attitudes, beliefs, and values.

Environmental Analysis:

Environmental analysis is finding out things like the seating arrangement, the number of people likely to attend, and the room lighting. The way the seats are arranged will affect the audience's response. It is also important to know how many people will be there for the speech. And the way the room is lighted will affect the way the audience responds.

Purposes:

  1. Teaching:

Speech is basically used to inform, to persuade, to entertain etc. An informative speech is like teaching. The purpose of an informative speech is to try to teach something to the audieilce. The success of your speech depends on whether the audience learns what you wanted to teach them.

  1. Persuasion:

You need to tell the audience why the information is useful and valuable. You need to make sure that the audience understands and remembers the essential information.

  1. Fluency and Clarity:

The main purpose behind an informative speech is to deliver the information or message clearly to the audience.

  1. Research Based:

The basic theme of an informative speech is the information; therefore, proper understanding of the topic is very important. An informative speech should be an outcome of the thorough study. An informative speaker is responsible for researching on the topic provided and presenting a detailed analysis.

  1. The Key to Success:

An informative speech is required in almost all fields, whether you are software professional or a non-professional, you may require to share information with your subordinates and managers. Keeping this perspective in mind, we can say that the informative speech is the key factor to success of a professional irrespective of the field he or she belongs to.

Kinds of Informative Speaking:

Informative speaking is of four kinds: briefing, goodwill, instruction and report.

  1. Briefing:

In this type of speech, the speaker gives background information and throws light on current situation.

  1. Instruction:

A person who has been with an organization for a long time gives instructions to younger employees. His effort is to make them follow his instructions.

  1. Goodwill:

The goal of an organization is to build goodwill and leave a positive company image in the community.

  1. Report:

In* such speech, the speaker has to read a periodic table or annual report on different areas relating to business.

Main Parts of Informative Speech:

There are three parts of informative speech.

  1. Introduction
  2. Body
  3. Summary
  4. Introduction:

To capture the attention of your audience, you may begin the informative speech in the following ways:

  1. Use a quotation:

The use of quotation may give a good start to your speech and inspire your audience to listen to you with interest. You may also use an anecdote, a joke or a story relating to your speech.

  1. State your Purpose:

Begin your speech with stating the purpose of your speech.

Hi. Ask questions:

You can capture the attention of your listeners by asking a question that makes your audience think about your offer or view points.

  1. Greet your audience:

If the audience applaud your appearance on the stage and welcome you with clapping, greet and thank them..

  1. Employ a startling statement:

A startling statement attracts the attention of the audience and holds it to the last.

  1. Body:

Body is the main section or part of your informative speech which is based upon the message you want to convey to your audience. Here you ■ try your best to impress the audience.

To organize the main section of your speech you may choose one of the following organizational plans:

/. Topical Organization:

You can divide your speech into certain topics.

  1. Chronological organization:

The chronological order presents the events according to the order I or sequence of their happening i.e., past, present, future.

Hi. Cause-to-effect Organization: *

You may use cause-to-effect organization for your effective i speech.

  1. Summary:

You may expect your audience to recall what you have expressed in your effective speech. This will be possible with the help of a summary of your speech.

SYNOPSIS

Listening is a complex and selective process of receiving, focusing, accepting and storing. It is an activity of great importance, as it demands high-class seriousness. It shows a person’s attitude towards other people. Faults of Listening: Listening is as important as the other three I skills, i.e., speaking reading and writing. Good listening skill can be hampered because of some elements. Prejudice; External distraction; Rethinking; Semantic Barrier; Importance of good delivery.
